The northern part of the Kietzer See is open to the public from the village of Altfriedland. From the central square of the pretty village, a road leads north, where at the end of the village a track turns right; the observation platform is signposted. But before you walk there, it is worth taking a look at the Klostersee on the left, where numerous species of ducks and pygmy merganser and goosander search for food.

We follow the track to the right (northeast) and pass a beautiful alder swamp forest. Here it is worth Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Great Spotted Woodpecker To look out for the small birds that can be seen all year round. In winter, large flocks of the small Siskin on the way, in spring and summer you can hear the concert of songbirds. After about 300 meters, the Kietzer Lake comes into view, the path now leads north along the Stöbber. The first observation hut appears after a short time at the edge of the forest and allows a wonderful view over the lake. In all seasons greylag geese which moult here in particularly large numbers in late summer. Grebes and the much rarer red-necked grebe can also be found all year round.

In the summer months it is worth visiting common terns They are close relatives of the seagulls and owe their name to their graceful flight. This and their deeply forked tail make them easy to recognize. During migration, many waders rest on the sandbank to the left of the observation hut. cormorants, grey and great egrets can actually always be seen.

Tip:

There is a QR code from “ornitho.de” attached to the observation tower. Simply scan the QR code and a current list of the bird species observed recently will appear.
