Heinrich von Kleist left behind only a few manuscripts, including 178 letters.
In 2024, a letter by Kleist, believed to be lost, surfaced at an auction. The Kleist Museum was able to acquire this letter with the support of the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg, the Cultural Foundation of the States, the Oder-Spree Savings Bank, the Kleist Museum Association, and a private donor.
The letter is addressed to the publisher Georg Andreas Reimer and is dated (probably) August 16, 1810. It concerns the publication of three works by Kleist: “The Earthquake in Chile,” “The Marquise of O…,” and “The Käthchen of Heilbronn.”
The exhibition presents this unique new acquisition to the public for the first time. At the same time, it illustrates the long-term consequences of the letter, as Kleist's works, published in 1810, continue to have a profound, immediate impact to this day.
