Exhibition: “Guests and Spaces” - Collages and drawings by Martin Hoffmann

  • Children and adolescents

Using translucent paper, the kind found in stamp albums and photo albums, graphic artist Martin Hoffmann (born 1948) glues together transparent structures that coalesce into human heads and figures. He describes his collage process as follows: "They are guests I've invited without knowing them. With each scrap, they become more recognizable." These are not portraits; they are created over weeks without preliminary sketches.

In his drawings, the graphic artist uses a sharp pencil to depict spatial situations that anyone might recognize or experience. These works are the result of precise designs, even constructions—because they don't simply reproduce observed situations, even though the drawings appear photorealistic. The artist explores what has affected him in similar situations.

In his posters, Martin Hoffmann explores political situations. He arranges rows of words in such a way that viewers can construct their own sentences. Hoffmann explains: "I don't want to react simply to complex problems and conflicts."

We invite you to explore the portraits and perspectives of this artist, who works in Berlin and Mecklenburg. His website: www.grafiker-hoffmann.de.
