The VHS is showing 7 classic films. Using selected DEFA films from the state-run GDR film production, recent German history (1946-1990) and the influence of GDR politics on film, culture and society are depicted.
2nd period: Manifestation of the party line (1953 to 1960)
Berlin - Corner of Schönhauser... (Director: Gerhard Klein, GDR 1957)
A group portrait of a handful of rebellious youths who meet daily under the elevated railway bridge on Schönhauser Allee. Each of the boys has different reasons for wanting to escape the oppressive confines of their parents' homes. Partly out of protest, partly out of boredom, they rebel against the rules of communal life. They listen to music, argue with passersby, and commit petty crimes. When Dieter and "Kohle"—two of the youths—flee to the West after being accused of manslaughter, they are interned in a youth detention center. There, "Kohle" dies. Dieter returns to East Berlin, reformed, and promises to lead a responsible life.
