Seeking escape. Photographs from the late GDR and early 1990s.

"Seeking Distant Lands" invites viewers to engage with the transformation of East Germany and discover new perspectives through photographs from 1983 to 1995. In the late GDR, where time seemed to stand still yet new beginnings were on the horizon, photographers found images to capture these events. The exhibition's five chapters—Youth, Work, Living Spaces, Body, and Violence—present a society in flux, whose changing conditions also shaped the photographers' work.

The focus of the photographs is on the realities of life in Brandenburg, while simultaneously revealing tensions and upheavals that contemporary society must also grapple with. Current questions about freedom, identity, and social change are directly linked to the long decade of German reunification.
