FRIENDSHIP! A frequently used phrase in the official language of the GDR. Socialism as a global movement was both an ideology and a promise in the early years after World War II. The practice of international solidarity and friendship among nations shaped global politics as well as people's everyday lives.
The still-young GDR courted transnational alliances, partly to secure its own legitimacy. Important partners were countries that were freeing themselves from colonial dependence. State-led expressions of solidarity permeated everyday life in schools, workplaces, and leisure activities. The continued impact of racist imagery and violence was rarely questioned, even when attacks on people who had entered the country, among other things, through labor agreements, increased in the 1980s.
The exhibition examines the contradictions of the much-cited friendship between nations based on the museum's holdings.
