Theatre on the Edge: Seed and Plant Exchange

The seed and plant exchange has long been a tradition at the beginning of spring at the Theater am Rand. The underlying idea: Globalized corporations use their monopolistic position to transform natural diversity into a cultivated uniformity. The old, robust, locally adapted landraces are being displaced by globally developed, mostly hybrid varieties. Only a lively exchange can counteract this process. Let's exchange our seeds, let's share our knowledge!

Open-pollinated vegetable varieties are an alternative to hybrids and genetic engineering that is both time-honored and relevant today – vibrant, nutrient-rich, and vital for biodiversity. Ute Boekholt from the Alt-Rosenthal seed and permaculture garden, who also tends our theater garden, is happy to offer inspiration and practical tips for getting started with seed saving in your own garden.

Around 15 p.m., Judith Düesberg, ecologist and genetic engineering expert at the Genetic Engineering Ethics Network, will give a presentation entitled "Genetic Engineering in a New Guise – A Threat to Transparency, Freedom of Choice, and Coexistence." Currently, the EU is issuing a carte blanche for plants modified with new genetic engineering techniques. If the law is adopted, these plants and their products will be exempt from all risk assessments, labeling requirements, and liability claims. In my presentation, I will briefly explain what these new genetic engineering techniques are and what consequences the new regulation will have for GMO-free agriculture, seed diversity, and consumers. Afterwards, I look forward to a lively discussion with you!

Following the swap meet, from 17 pm onwards, we will be showing two films as part of the [Brandenburg Eco Film Tour](/spielplan/brandenburger-oekofilmtour/) with a discussion with the audience.

Registration or reservation is not necessary.
