Introduction to the traditional Japanese embroidery techniques of Sashiko and Boro. The word Sashiko translates to "small stitches." Both techniques are based on simple running stitches worked by hand. Sashiko embroidery is done in traditional geometric patterns, usually on cotton fabrics, to enhance the fabric's quality and durability. In earlier times in Japan, Boro textiles involved sewing pieces of fabric together and over each other using running stitches to breathe new life into worn-out garments. This sustainable approach to textiles, which originated from resource scarcity, has long since found its place in today's fashion world. The workshop will explore the historical background through examples and delve into various traditional Sashiko patterns. Participants will creatively apply this technically simple Japanese embroidery method to small projects. No prior knowledge is required; the focus is on fun and relaxation.
