The Flood of the Oder
One of the historical milestones of the Oder river landscape is the decisive battle for the Seelow Heights to cross the river, in which hundreds of thousands of soldiers lost their lives in the final days of the Second World War. The region was also marked by the flood of the century at the end of the 1990s, in which residents and thousands of helpers fought in a dramatic battle against the elemental forces of a raging river. On July 27, 1997, the water level in Frankfurt (Oder) reached a record high of 6,56 meters, and in Eisenhüttenstadt it reached 7,17 meters. The last major Oder flood occurred in May 2010, when the water level almost reached the level of 1997, but the damage was not as severe as it was then thanks to precautionary measures.
