Lake Scharmützel was formed during the last Ice Age, when glaciers up to 600 meters thick carved a deep-sea trench approximately ten kilometers long. With its size, it is the second largest natural lake in Brandenburg and one of the state's most important recreational areas. Its historical nickname, "Märkisches Meer" (Brandenburg Sea), reflects its long tradition as a holiday destination. It has repeatedly been awarded the title of "Germany's Favorite Lake." From the popular viewpoint along the lakeside promenade, one can get a sense of the extent and depth of this glacially formed body of water.

Bad Saarow is a place of transformation. While the manor houses of Saarow and Pieskow were still languishing in Fontane's time, around 100 years ago the town began its transformation from a Brandenburg backwater to a "state-recognized thermal brine and moorland spa." Healing moorland and thermal brine, nowadays sourced from the 450-meter-deep Catharinenquelle spring, along with elegant villas and country houses on the shores of Lake Scharmützel, attracted Berlin's high society during the Roaring Twenties to the town, which has been called Bad Saarow since 1923. The first train stopped here in 1912. The station, built a year earlier, became a traditional landmark.
