Nature Park
 Dahme-Heideseen

idyllic nature as far as the eye can see

The Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park represents a typical section of the young moraine landscape within the East Brandenburg heath and lake area.

From very wet to very dry

The numerous bodies of water form a network for many animal and plant species. Beavers and otters live here alongside water claws and water lilies. Impressive large bird species such as sea eagles, ospreys and cranes can be observed just as easily as the small, magnificently coloured kingfisher.

In the large forest areas, the pine is the dominant tree species. There are also mixed alder and oak forests. In dry heath areas, however, there are extensive birch stands. This is where the Walker beetle lives, a beetle that is also the "mascot" of the nature park.

Special animal world

The grass snake is quite common on the banks of water. The kingfisher builds its nesting tubes in steep walls, for example on the banks of the Dahme. It can occasionally be seen flying along rivers and lakes. Common and typical species of pine forests are the mistle thrush, coal tit and crested tit, while the nightjar is a typical bird of heathland areas (for example near Massow).

The grey heron is often seen hunting for prey in ditches and on lake shores. The situation is completely different with the otter: this marten, which inhabits the network of waterways in the nature reserve, is rarely seen due to its shy way of life. Bats live in attics, window shutters and cellars of buildings in the villages. They hunt for prey at dusk and at night and then show off their breathtaking flying skills.

nature observations

Storkow Castle offers many opportunities to experience nature and the landscape "live". The Salt Trail leads to the important inland salt deposits around Storkow. Here, saline water rises from deeper layers of the earth to the surface and allows plants to grow that are otherwise only found on the sea coast.

The Groß Schauen chain of lakes, the heart of the nature park, gives visitors the impression of "untouched nature". The seven lakes can be easily circumnavigated on a cycle path on an attractive day trip. The wide reed belts and almost impenetrable shore areas provide cover for countless animal species. In spring and autumn, the spectacle of bird migration can be experienced impressively from observation towers and lookout points.
