Bad Freienwalde

Brandenburg's oldest spa town

Freienwalde, stretching out at the foot of a chain of hills, covered with gloomy firs, slender birches, and harsh beeches, with healing waters coming from the ground. The earth gave itself as a gift.
Hans Keilson – Honorary Citizen

The writer and poet Theodor Fontane wrote about Bad Freienwalde in 1863: “Freienwalde - a pretty word for a pretty place”. There is no better way to describe the spa town!

The town was first mentioned in documents in 1316 as a merchant settlement at an important crossing of the Oder. The town's bathing tradition began in 1683 with the discovery of healing springs. It has been called Bad Freienwalde since 1925. To this day, the mud bath offers people an inexhaustible supply of health-promoting resources.

The city's landmarks are its four towers: the observation tower, the Bismarck tower, the owl tower and the ski jump tower. From here you can capture soaring heights and views that leave you wanting more! The area surrounding the city is ideal for hiking - ideal for taking a breather.

Bad Freienwalde

Brandenburg's oldest spa town

In people's imagination, the moor is associated with misty landscapes and people lost in the depths. However, in Bad Freienwalde, no one needs to be afraid of the moor anymore. Instead, the moor has a long tradition in Bad Freienwalde and ensures the continued existence of Brandenburg's oldest spa town, which has existed since 1840.

As early as the 17th century, Bad Freienwalde became an important centre for spa treatment, healing and recovery following the discovery of the Kurfürstenquelle spring. This spa tradition in Bad Freienwalde is reflected in the historical architecture of the spa district, the spa park artistically designed by Lenné. Today, guests can enjoy the healing effects of the Bad Freienwalde moor in the modern building of the Bad Freienwalde specialist clinic and moor bath and in the spa center.

The Bad Feienwald natural moor is mined not far from the town in the Finower Polder low moor area. An important aspect is the return of the moor after use. This preserves the natural cycle of the moor and could even be used again for moor application after a few years.

  • How about the Bad Freienwalde Tower Diploma? On a 12 km route, on well-maintained paths, 4 observation towers to climb: The Bismarck-, owl, ski jump and observation tower on the Galgenberg.

  • In 1840, mud baths were introduced, which were initially administered according to a secret recipe. historic spa facilities were supplemented by a new clinic building, which was opened to the public in 1994.

  • The famous architect Carl Gotthard Langhans, who also designed the Brandenburg Gate, built a particularly magnificent lodging house for King Friedrich Wilhelm II. In the autumn of 1790, after only two years of construction, it was available to the many aristocratic Berlin bathers who had come to visit. Today it is the spa center from Bad Freienwalde.

The one-way route is over 25 km from Falkenberg (Mark) to Bad Freienwalde: 4 towers, great views and almost 1.000 meters of elevation! But be careful: if the tour is too difficult, your fitness was too weak ;)

Cultural Heritage Sites Bad Freienwalde

European Cultural Heritage in the Oderbruch

After being drained in the 18th century, the Oderbruch developed into one of the most interesting small landscapes in Europe. It is not without reason that the landscape was nominated for the European Heritage Label in 2020, which was awarded in 2022. This makes the Oderbruch the first cultural landscape to be awarded the seal as a cultural heritage site. The ideals and history of the EU are symbolized here in a special way.

The cultural heritage sites are the essence of the landscape and make it tangible.

Our colleague Jennifer Ehm thought that there is not only a lot to see in the Oder-Spree Lake District, but also a lot to hear.

So she grabbed her recording device and met interesting people on her forays through the Oder-Spree Lake District. The result is podcast episodes that provide insights into the work and voluntary commitment of many people in the Lake District. They report on tours and describe the beautiful and water-rich natural landscape of the Lake District.

#7 Thuringian view in Brandenburg [September 2022]

On our late riser tour near Bad Freienwalde we had a real hiking expert with us. Heiko Walter - Fights from the Bad Freienwalde Tourismus GmbH showed us the highlights of the 10-kilometer-long round trip, where you can experience a real low mountain feeling. One of the many interesting stops we made was at House of Nature Care and met the board member Dagmar Heinze and learned a lot about nature conservation and the Kretschmann couple.
