Kleist City Without Borders

The European twin city of Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice is a fascinating example of living border crossing and cultural diversity. The two cities are located directly on the Oder, in the middle of the Oder river landscape, and are connected by a bridge. Only a few minutes separate historic Frankfurt (Oder), the birthplace of Heinrich von Kleist, from Słubice, a Polish city with its own charm. This unique location makes the twin cities a living symbol of a united Europe.

Frankfurt (Oder) is a cultural beacon with numerous museums, including the world-famous Kleist Museum, dedicated to the life and work of the famous playwright. The city also has three theaters, the Kleist Forum with a varied schedule and the Brandenburg State Orchestra. Historical buildings such as the magnificent town hall from the 13th century, the Franciscan monastery church, which today serves as an internationally renowned concert hall, and the imposing St. Mary's Church from the Brick Gothic period bring the city's eventful history to life. The annual Hanseatic City Festival "Bunter Hering" and the music festival "Classics without Borders" are just a few examples of the many cultural highlights that the city has to offer.

At the same time, Frankfurt (Oder) presents itself as green city with numerous parks such as the Lennépark - one of the oldest public parks in Germany - and the island of Ziegenwerder. These oases of peace offer numerous opportunities for relaxation and for walks along the Oder.

Słubice, as a Polish neighbour, enriches the cultural life with its own offerings and a special mixture of Polish and German traditions. cross-border cooperation and the Dialogue between the two cities not only promote exchange, but also mutual understanding and the vibrant diversity of this region.

A free, thinking man does not remain where chance pushes him; or if he remains, he remains for reasons, for choosing the better.

Art in Public Urban Space

discover more than 250 works of art

From Neuberesinchen to the city center, Frankfurt's cityscape is characterized by numerous works of art in public spaces. Most of the more than 250 works of art were purchased between 1960 and 1990 or created as commissioned works. But some listed sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries can also be found, especially in the parks of the Oder city. In addition, since the 1990s, further works of art have been created by regional and national artists for the constantly changing urban space as part of artistic competitions.

In addition to statues and sculptures made of bronze, artificial stone, sandstone or ceramics, wall designs and objects of arts and crafts are represented in Frankfurt (Oder). The design of public spaces with works of art reached its peak so far in Grosse Scharrnstrasse. In this pedestrian zone alone, 18 works of art of all genres can be seen. Parks such as Lennépark or Oderpromenade, on the other hand, are predominantly characterized by figurative statues and sculptures. And despite the massive demolition in Neuberesinchen, this district is also characterized primarily by the colorful sculptures of Erika Stürmer-Alex and the metal designs of Christian Roehl.

An overview of all works of art in public space is provided by the website of the Cultural Office the city of Frankfurt (Oder). The locations and essential information about the individual works of art can be found on an interactive map.

art venues & galleries

discover creative places

But art is not only to be discovered in museums. You will also find exciting exhibition spaces on the streets and on house facades as "art in architecture", in the Spectrum Gallery, in the Gallery B, at the European University Viadrina, in the Kleist Forum, in the libraries and in the Kulturmanufaktur Gerstenberg.

The art festival ART | an der Grenze, organized by students and citizens, has become an integral part of the city, and numerous studios of exciting artists can be explored in the city area and invite visitors to the “Open Studios Day” every year.

Theater Venues & Stages

The modern one Kleist Forum offers the most extensive stage program in the city. The architecturally impressive culture, congress and event center offers a diverse program in cooperation with theaters from all over Brandenburg. From classical opera, operetta, drama and dance to classical and jazz concerts or the European Festival for Song and World Music transVOCALE, readings and the program of the Bürgerbühne - the Kleist Forum and also the Messehallen as the largest event venue stands for diversity and high cultural standards.

The city's three other theaters have a permanent ensemble. The cabaret The Oderhahns has been delighting audiences for over 40 years in more than 200 mostly sold-out performances a year. With the pointed beak of the city's heraldic animal, the rooster, they have a lot to say about politics and society. Theater Frankfurt with its theatre school stages its own plays, classics and fairy tales from all over the world. A special feature is the Theater des Lachens in the Gerstenberger Höfen. As the only puppet theatre in Brandenburg, it offers award-winning puppet and object theatre for children, young people and adults at the highest level.

Music & Diversity

North of the city bridge is the ornamented roof beams of the Concert Hall "Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach", whose namesake once studied in Frankfurt (Oder) and had a decisive influence on the city's musical life. The concert hall in the former Franciscan monastery with its impressive pointed arch ceiling houses the Brandenburg State OrchestraFounded in 1842, under the artistic direction of Jörg-Peter Weigele, it is dedicated to international composers, concert series such as the Philharmonic Concerts and musical and cultural education. Numerous guest performances take the excellent A-Orchestra to the world's major concert halls and back to the Gothic brick building on the Oder. The concert hall not only houses the world's only permanent exhibition on Emanuel von Bach, curated by the Museum Viadrina. Here you will also find the Singakademie at home. The 230 singers of the five choirs perform moving concerts under the colorful ceiling. But many other choirs, orchestras and bands, some of which cross borders, also make music together on the Oder, because the Oder city is a real music city.

In the west of the Oder city are the Messehallen. They are the largest event venue in eastern Brandenburg. Anyone looking for comedy and concerts, musicals, theme fairs or varied show programs for children and adults will find what they are looking for here. With their wide range of options, they are a popular location for balls and company events.

Getting moving in the twin cities

Then as now, people on the Oder are on the move, because Frankfurt (Oder) and today's Słubice can look back on a long and successful sporting tradition. Since the beginnings of sports clubs in the 19th century, Frankfurt (Oder) has developed into a stronghold of competitive sport. Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, 14 Olympic champions and 18 world champions have come from the city.

Since 2016, the city has been honoring its most successful Olympians in an Olympic grove in the center of the city. The grove, lined with linden trees and flowerbeds, leads from the town hall down to the Oder and is a beautiful walk in any season. But the twin cities are also looking to the future in terms of sport, because with the Olympic training center, fantastic sports halls, cycle paths and the architecturally outstanding stadium in what is now Słubice, everything an athlete's heart desires is available here.

The Olympic Grove between the Oder and the town hall is not the only thing that testifies to the city's enthusiasm for sport. The Brandenburg Hall, the fitness trail in the city forest, the exercise courses on the Oder and in the Klingetal with the nearby football and volleyball courts also invite you to spend your free time in sport. Whether in the MY JUMP trampoline park, in the climbing hall in the Gerstenberger Höfen, on the golf course next to the stadium in Słubice or in the shooting sports center - the twin city remains a sports city.
