  • The cloister of the Neuzell monastery has been largely preserved in its late Gothic form and the impressive cross-nativity vaults and wall paintings can be viewed.

Spiritual, intellectual and natural pleasures

The famous doctor and natural scientist Hildegard von Bingen is said to have summed up her medical advice for many illnesses succinctly: "Cerevisiam bibat! Drink beer!" This advice was also followed by the monks of the Neuzelle monastery in their monastery brewery, the history of which can be traced back to the year 1416.

Anyone visiting the resort of Neuzelle should therefore not miss a tour of the monastery brewery and distillery and also get to know the "bathing beer", which you can not only drink but also bathe in at the Kummerower Hof.

Despite all the monastic brewing, the Cistercian monastery is Neuzelle's outstanding work of art. With its completely preserved complex, the center of which is the collegiate church of St. Mary, the originally Gothic church is today one of the most important baroque churches in Central Europe. The newly designed baroque monastery garden with orangery is perfect for resting, marveling and strolling.

You can do that in the unmistakable landscape around Neuzelle. The landscape and natural areas are more varied than anywhere else. Stream valleys with deep gorges and cuts form a wonderful contrast to the table-flat floodplains on the Oder and Neisse. In the middle of this idyllic landscape, museums, castles, churches and mills tell of earlier times. Cozy restaurants offer delicious regional food. And you're sure to find a freshly tapped beer from the Neuzell monastery brewery.

The Monk's Tour

On the 121 km long bike tour, discover evidence of the monks from Neuzelle, which can still be seen today. The once numerous mills in the Schlaubetal valley can be traced back to their influence.

Let nature work its magic on you as you drive through the wild and romantic Schlaubetal valley and enjoy a rest in the river landscape or the wide view over the great river.
