Lennépark Frankfurt (Oder)

© Seenland Oder-Spree / Florian Läufer

We have this beautiful garden area in the heart of Frankfurt (Oder) to thank for one of the city's early civic movements, which was launched in 1834 by wealthy residents to prevent the demolition of the no longer necessary historic ramparts. At that time, they found an ally in Peter Joseph Lenné, the Prussian Royal Garden Director, who also developed the plans for the design of the park.

This is how the second oldest public park in Germany was created. Even back then, public construction projects took more time, as the park's creation was delayed by various interests within the city and financed by the citizens of Frankfurt.

Gutspark Alt Madlitz

The park of the Alt Madlitz estate literally breathes artistic air. In the second half of the 18th century, important German thinkers and poets met here to debate art, philosophy and science in the shade of the trees.

First mentioned in the 13th century, it was acquired by the Counts Finck von Finckenstein in 1751. The tutor of the Prussian kings Frederick William II and Frederick II did not often stay at the castle estate. It was only his son, Frederick Ludwig Karl, who used the estate as a permanent residence and developed it into a true court of the muses.

There is no right way to see nature. There are a hundred.

Behave properly: Tips for your park visit

How to enjoy our parks and gardens respectfully

To ensure that everyone can enjoy active recreation and cultural enjoyment in the various parks and gardens, the individual operators invest a lot of love and effort to keep them in a well-kept and as natural a state as possible. Given the size and planting of some areas, this requires a lot of time and financial investment.

You can help protect these beautiful facilities with your behavior and attention by following a few rules of conduct.

  • Beautiful paths for walking
Use the designated paths through the park if the park authorities specify this. Walking on the lawns is certainly not prohibited in most cases, but please make sure that no plants are damaged.

  • Dispose of waste correctly
A long walk makes you thirsty and hungry. If you have food, bottles or other waste with you, please do not throw them carelessly into the park, but dispose of them in the waste bins provided.

  • Plants belong in the park
You can find unusual plants and flowers in the parks. But they belong where they were planted. Do not break off branches or pick flowers that are only intended for admiration in the park.

  • Consideration brings joy
Young and old are often out and about in the open air at the same time. Please be considerate of one another. Older visitors like a little peace and quiet and children love the exuberance of being out in nature. Loud music and historic parks are not a good fit either. Making sure that you don't disturb one another helps all generations to relax.

  • Games and bicycles in the park
Sports activities such as ball games, bike rides or games of catch are very popular in the park. There is plenty of space for all ages to run around. But please make sure that this is permitted under the park rules and make sure that no bushes or other plants are damaged.

  • Picnic for gourmets
In summer, many groups of trees invite you to have a picnic in the airy shade. This is a good idea for the whole family or a couple, as long as the park regulations allow it. But barbecuing is definitely not allowed in parks unless there are designated areas for it. Please find out beforehand so that you don't have to carry your picnic basket into the park for nothing.

  • And what about the dog?
Of course, they should be on a leash! Dogs must be kept on leashes on public roads and paths in Brandenburg. It is of course very tempting to let your four-legged friend off the leash on a large green area. But a dog running loose would not necessarily be a welcome playmate for other visitors or for the small animals living in the park. Please also do not forget to pick up your dog's droppings and dispose of them properly. Even if the dog does not do its business on the side of the road, a child or another park visitor could involuntarily stand in them and who likes to have something smelly on their shoes?

Anyone who retains the ability to recognize beauty will never grow old.
