The Wriezener Alte Oder is a section around 25 kilometers long and stretches - partly as a nature reserve - from Wriezen via Hohensaaten, where it flows into the present-day Oder. For anglers, the Wriezener Alte Oder has not only a lot, but everything to offer! From eels to pike-perch, almost all native fish species feel at home here. Eels and pike over a meter long, strong asp, all kinds of small and medium-sized catfish, tench and now and again heavyweight carp have already been reported from this untouched section with an average water depth of a good 3 meters.

Coarse fish anglers get their money's worth in the Alte Oder. With a little groundbait, roach, rudd, etc. can be easily lured onto the hook. Fishing with a feeder basket is very successful. With quickly dissolving bait and three to four maggots on the small hook, the tip of the feeder rod rarely stands still. Eel anglers will often come across small catfish during their nightly sessions, which enjoy the dew or dung worm. Carp anglers must be patient. Professional fishermen often catch one of the beefy barbels in their nets. In the much narrower and more primitive section between Wriezen and Oderberg, there are many reed belts, weed fields, and old trees along the banks - ideal shelter for various fish species. Particularly worth mentioning are the burbot catches, which are always successful here in the cold season. In the summer months, heavy weed growth can make fishing difficult.

Between Oderberg and the Hohensaaten lock, the Alte Oder changes its face. From here, it is significantly wider and is used by shipping for almost 8 kilometers as part of the Oder-Havel waterway. From late summer, predatory fish anglers can look forward to increased catches of pike, perch, zander and catfish. When the cold sets in, burbot catches are also added. The area around the lock at Hohensaaten is considered a hotspot. In summer, good asp catches are often achieved here with quickly guided wobblers just below the surface. But good zander catches are also reported from time to time. Some fish weigh more than 4 kg.
