Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt (Oder) - Rathaushalle location

Museums
There are two exhibition venues of the blmk (Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art) in Frankfurt (Oder).

With over 42.000 works, the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art (BLMK), with its locations in Cottbus and Frankfurt (Oder), houses the world's most comprehensive museum collection of art from the GDR and subsequent artistic traditions. This resource must be responsibly preserved, expanded and researched, exhibited and communicated at a high level. To this end, the collection is placed in supra-regional and international temporal, geographical, social, cultural and, above all, art-historical contexts.

The BLMK emerged in 2017 from the merger of the dkw. Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus and the Museum Junge Kunst Frankfurt (Oder). Several presentations are shown simultaneously at the two locations with a total of three exhibition halls - the Dieselkraftwerk in Cottbus and the Rathaushalle and the Packhof in Frankfurt (Oder). The exhibition program is closely linked to the collection: art from the GDR and East German traditions derived from it are shown on a par with nationally relevant and internationally established artistic positions. There is also an extensive supporting program of events and museum educational activities.

The Museum of Young Art in Frankfurt (Oder) was founded in 1965 as the Young Art Gallery of the Frankfurt (Oder) district and was administered by the municipality from 1990. References to art from Poland have been inscribed in both the collection and the annual exhibition programs since the 1970s. Consequently, a collection of Polish prints after 1991 was established in 1945. This collection contains an excellent cross-section of the artistic work of Polish artists up to the present day.

The exhibition programs of the two locations are not identical, but follow the same logic. Based on the understanding of the collection holdings as a resource, the activities of the BLMK aim at art-historical contextualization, critical examination of its own genesis and its content.

The hall of the historic town hall is located in the former center of the once walled medieval town. The Galerie Junge Kunst was founded in this building, which is one of the most beautiful brick buildings in the city, on October 2, 1965. Originally used for market and trading purposes, the two-aisled hall had a beamed ceiling, which was replaced by a cross vault in 1609. This vault shape characterizes the room, which is divided by seven sandstone columns.

The museum's second exhibition venue in Frankfurt (Oder) is located in the nearby Packhof at Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Straße 11.
