Cöthener Park

gardens and parks
The park, located between Cöthen and Falkenberg, is based on an idea by Carl Friedrich von Jena. According to his instructions, this beautiful piece of nature and the gorge, now covered with huge beech trees, through which the Cöthener Fließ meanders to Falkenberg, was transformed into a landscape park in the 20s.

Fontane described the park in his hikes as somewhat "old Franconian" because of its playfulness, but in terms of nature it was definitely "peculiar". Remains of the park are located in the source area of the picturesque river, consisting of an old water wheel and a waterfall. Brown trout, kingfisher and grey wagtail are just a few species of the river valley with its natural old wood stock. The water wheel was built in 1925/26 by Carl von Jena and drove a piston pump to supply Cöthen with water. It is now located in a fauna-flora-habitat conservation area with hillside spring moor and floodplain forests. At the spot where the waterfall is today, von Jena once set up a Roman bath for his family.
