The name "Watzmann" of the 106-meter-high hill near Bad Freienwalde has its origins in the region's history: around 120 years ago, hiking maps already showed a "Watzmann mountain". Its name is said to go back to historical events. Around 1180, mercenaries from Bavaria hired themselves out to Malchow Castle. It stood where the Bismarck Tower stands today. At that time, the mercenaries noticed the little mountain, from which they could easily spot enemies. Plagued by homesickness for the Alpine panorama, they simply called the hill "Watzmann". However, resourceful tourism officials came up with the amusing height of 1.062 decimetres. As an attraction, the three-metre-high summit cross made of larch wood with a round bench was also built when the mountain hiking park was expanded.
