Evangelical Parish Church of the Holy Cross

Churches
Neuzelle Monastery has two churches: the slightly smaller and slightly secluded "Evangelical Church of the Holy Cross - Neuzelle Monastery" was intended for public pastoral care and was built as a "people's church" for the people. Opposite it stands the collegiate church of St. Mary, which was reserved for the monks or the convent of the monastery.

The cross-domed building was built on the site of the older gate church from the 14th century. The vault, decorated with beautiful bandwork, opens up to the chancel and forms a mighty dome. Here, the largest ceiling fresco in Lower Lusatia shows the triumph of the Catholic Church.
The Church of the Cross revels in the Baroque style, the dome fresco measures 128 square meters and lets the believers literally look into the sky.

After the Reformation, the monks in Neuzelle took great care of the remaining Catholics in the region. For this purpose, the Protestant Church of the Holy Cross was built in the Rococo style around 1730.

Since the monastery was dissolved in 1817, it has been used as a Protestant parish church, while the former monastery church of St. Mary remained Catholic. Today, both congregations exist in close proximity on the monastery grounds. A special feature in Brandenburg - Neuzelle is the lived ecumenism.

The Protestant Church of the Holy Cross can be visited individually or as part of a guided tour.
