In 1934, construction began on the airfield in Neuhardenberg as a secret military airport. In 1937, the first rocket-powered aircraft from the Heinkel factory were tested here. During the Second World War, various missions took place from here. At the end of the war, the Red Army used the airfield for the "Berlin Operation".
In 1949, Neuhardenberg was renamed Marxwalde. From 1959, the GDR government aviation squadron was based here and the airfield was guarded 24 hours a day. Sigmund Jähn, the first German in space (1978), lived and worked in Neuhardenberg for 18 years. The MiG-21 fighter plane on display in the museum was flown by him. After the end of the GDR, the German army's air transport squadron was stationed at the airfield.
In addition to an exhibition of model aircraft of all types flown in the NVA, the museum also features an exhibition on the history of Neuhardenberg airfield from 1934 to the present day.
The museum is located at the entrance to the B167, exit towards Wriezen, sign airfield exhibition
