Friedenskirche Frankfurt (Oder)

  • Churches
Today's Friedenskirche is Frankfurt's oldest church. As early as 1226, a parish church of the market settlement dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of merchants, was mentioned on the same site. With the expansion of the town to the south, the construction of the market and town hall, and the construction of St. Mary's Church in the second half of the 2th century, St. Nicholas gradually lost importance. After the Reformation in the 13th century, it was temporarily secularized and even used as a granary. From then on, the parish church of the Protestant St. Nicholas congregation, which in recent times consisted mainly of residents of the Dammvorstadt, today's Słubice, was the former Franciscan monastery church, which also took on the name St. Nicholas Church (now the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Concert Hall).

The old St. Nicholas Church was not used as a place of worship again until the 17th century by the Reformed and French Reformed congregations (Huguenots). From 1880 to 1894, extensive reconstruction work by Friedrich Adler resulted in the current neo-Gothic form. In 1929, the virtually nameless Reformed Church was renamed the Peace Church. The reasons for this choice of name are unknown.
