In 1953, the Gerstenberger family fled to the West. The company was nationalized and produced standard furniture. In 1993, the property was returned to the Gerstenberger family. Today, in addition to the “Theater of Laughter” in the old boiler house, the Alpine Club’s climbing hall and a number of artists’ studios and workshops have found their place here.
Gerstenberger Höfe
In 1895, Moritz Gerstenberger bought the Mantz joinery and founded the Mantz and Gerstenberger company in the industrial district of Frankfurt north of the old town, which had been developing since 1871. The company produced furniture and entire room furnishings on a large scale. The company grew dynamically and built more and more production and administration buildings. The largely preserved building and factory complex today extends into the block between Berliner Strasse, Klingestrasse and Ziegelstrasse as well as the former port area. After 1914, the history of Mantz and Gerstenberger was varied. The largest number of employees, 900, was reached in the early XNUMXs by producing gramophone cases.
