But grass snakes, common toads and water frogs are also found here, as are otters and beavers. Water lilies, pond lilies, water irises, sundews and royal ferns thrive in the lakes and adjacent wetlands, to name just a few.
The diversity of species continues beneath the water surface. Almost all Central European fish species of interest to anglers can be found in the Schaplowsee, Großer Schauener See, Großer Wochowsee, Großer Selchower See, Schweriner See and Bugker See, covering a total area of around 1.000 hectares. The main fish species are eel, pike, carp and pike-perch.
However, the protection of the Groß Schauener Seenkette and the surrounding areas has a significant impact on the fishing area. For example, fishing from boats is restricted to the Groß Schauener See and Alter Wochowsee. In all six bodies of water, fishing is only permitted from certain bathing areas, which are specified in the ordinance on the "Groß Schauener Seenkette" nature reserve.

the Sielmann Forum, an interactive exhibition run by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation. Here you can admire various specimens of the fish species found there. The nature reserve also issues fishing licenses and provides boats for hire.
You can also launch a rowing boat and cast your fishing rod in the area marked with buoys on the nature reserve's grounds. That's around 150 hectares of water!
The average water depth is two meters, and is home to large pike-perch. The largest specimens weighed almost ten kilos. But eels measuring over 90 centimeters and heavy carp are also frequently caught in the Groß Schauener Lake - despite the ban on night fishing.
Only club members are allowed to fish from boats on the Old Wochowsee; there are no shore spots. A special feature of the Old Wochowsee worth mentioning is the island at the southern end. From March 01.03st to July 15.07th of each year, you must keep a distance of at least 200 meters; entering the island is prohibited all year round. The reason: the island is used intensively as a cormorant colony. Fishing opportunities on the other waters are limited to a few designated spots. Admittedly, there is very little space for anglers in the Groß Schauener Seenkette nature reserve. Species conservation, animal welfare and nature conservation have priority here.
