Basket making, one of the oldest trades in human history, was very much alive in the Oderbruch. No wonder, because the material needed for it grew particularly well here: the willow. It was introduced from North America by Ernst Hödt in 1890. Whereas wickerwork used to be found almost everywhere, it is now often replaced by plastic. Not so in the old school in Buschdorf, right on the country road towards Zechin. This is where Thea Müller's basket-making museum is located. With the support of her extensive network, the master basket maker has collected over 2.000 unique wickerwork items from all over the world.
In the old school rooms, there are traditional utensils from fishing and agriculture as well as many unusual items such as a woven honey pot from Siberia, a treasure chest made of straw woven by Russian prisoners of war, hats from Asia and much more. A guided tour of the collection with Thea Müller is highly recommended. The Buschdorf bakery is located right next to the museum.
