The Oderhafen in Groß Neuendorf was built in 1953 and was a freight transshipment point. The grain was dried and cleaned in the engine house, temporarily stored in the warehouses and then loaded over the former conveyor bridge and the loading tower into rail wagons or ships and transported further into the region, to Berlin or even to England. Until the Oderbruchbahn was closed in 1966, there was a lot of activity in Groß Neuendorf, even passenger ships docked here.
In 2005, the current "Groß Neuendorf Cultural Harbour" was renovated. The core of the listed ensemble consists of two towers that are visible from afar - the former engine house, which now houses a hotel, and the former loading tower. The two unequal brothers are connected by a 70-meter-long conveyor bridge made of steel latticework, which has been converted into a public viewing platform.
Today, the old loading tower is home to a holiday apartment and a café. On the three remaining tracks of the port, there are three historic railway carriages from the former Oderbruchbahn where you can spend the night. They date from the same period of construction as the loading tower and have also been renovated with great attention to detail in keeping with the monument. There is also a bar carriage for the open-air area on the Oder terrace, and in the atmosphere of a 1920s saloon carriage, you can experience old Berlin cabaret, romantic piano evenings, readings and much more in the theater carriage.
