Even the old Fontane described in his travels through the Margraviate of Brandenburg that Bad Freienwalde owed everything to its mountains. For from them came springs that had a healing effect against fever, gout and eye diseases.

As early as 1683, the local pharmacist Gensichen described this, and the Great Elector from "far away" Berlin noticed it. He then sent his court alchemist to Bad Freienwalde to examine it before setting off himself to be the first spa guest to taste the beneficial water. The reputation as the oldest spa town in Brandenburg was born. Back then, it was the healing water that helped guests recover, but now it is the moor that is used as a local remedy for diseases of the musculoskeletal system and rheumatism. Today, only one spring flows on the site, which is reverently called the "Elector's Spring". It was set in red sandstone around 1900 to give the health spring a befitting appearance.

The landscape park in Brunnental was created at the end of the 18th century according to plans by Peter Joseph Lenné. From 1816 onwards it was redesigned in the style of the English
Landscape gardens were redesigned. From the chapel above the adjacent specialist clinic and mud bath Bad Freienwalde, you have a beautiful view of the historic spa facilities with the old spa house, the Kurfürstenquelle on the edge of the park and the spa center. The master builder Carl Gotthard Langhans built it as a bathing and lodging house for the nobility, who sought a change from their daily spa life. Today, the lavishly renovated and lovingly restored house combines history and modernity.

The Papenmühle, a house built in the classicist style, is located in the middle of the spa park right next to the Papenteich. The pond used to be used to power the mill. Bad Freienwalde has been officially recognized as a health resort since 1864 due to its effective mud treatments. Even a walk through the beautifully landscaped spa park definitely has a calming effect.
