The explorer, zoologist, botanist and geologist was born in Trebtasch in 1813. In 1842 he arrived in Australia, where he lived until his death in 1848. The scientist is one of the most famous Germans in Australia; a district of Sydney as well as plants and animals are named after him. One area of the museum documents the history of the 1.000-year-old Trebatsch.
The museum was opened in 175 to mark his 1988th birthday and has been run by the Ludwig Leichhardt Society since 1990. The foundation has 50 members, 7 of whom are actively involved in the museum and offer guided tours. You can visit the Leichhardt Room, which also hosts various events, as well as a replica of a schoolroom from 1900 and a small local history room with works from the region. The museum's exhibition pays tribute to the researcher who is still missing in Australia.

An approximately eleven-kilometre-long hiking and cycling trail following Leichhardt's footsteps begins at the museum.
