The listed museum farm at Sonnenluch with its herb and fruit garden is home to the Erkner local history museum. The latter is the central point of the farm and is located in the oldest Ernhaus in Central Germany from the time of Frederick's internal colonization (around 1760).
The museum houses a permanent exhibition that provides an overview of the key eras, events and personalities in the history of the town of Erkner from the Bronze Age to the present day. For example, you can take a look at a traditional black kitchen. But a journey of discovery through the GDR is also offered: browse through a fully furnished living room and a kitchen with typical East German products.
In the grounds of the museum courtyard, there are further exhibitions in a converted barn, one about crafts and trade in Erkner, the other about the beginnings of the world's first fully synthetic plastic, Bakelite, and thus the development of the chemical industry in Erkner. Changing special exhibitions also find their place here.
The outdoor area with herb garden, orchard, insect hotel and historic wood-fired oven invites you to linger. There is also a small exhibition of agricultural equipment here. Various festivals and events are also held regularly in the museum courtyard, such as the Easter bazaar or the colonists' festival.
The museum courtyard is located a little south of the city center, but can be reached from the regional and S-Bahn stations in just under half an hour on foot. The nearest stops are Erkner Buchhorster Straße or Bergstraße.
Note: Since people were much smaller at the time the house was built, the doors are kept very low!
