Traditional winegrowing in the historic monastery complex Even the early Cistercian monks knew what a beneficial effect a good glass of wine can have and built their own vineyard within their monastery walls. In the 18th century, Abbot Martinus had vines from Burgundy planted in the middle of the magnificent baroque complex. The climate near the Oder apparently allowed good-tasting wine to flourish in the sun.
Wine was grown in the monastery until 1840. In the years that followed, the monks paid less attention to it. It was not until 2002 that this old tradition was revived and wine growing was re-cultivated.
The vineyard is owned by the "Stift Neuzelle" foundation and is operated by the Neuzeller Kloster-Winzer eV, which was founded in 2002. For almost 20 years now, it has lovingly taken care of the development of wine culture in the Oder region. The climatic conditions of recent years, with more sunshine and milder temperatures, are ideal for growing wine and allow various grape varieties to ripen in the vineyard. 1.500 vines have now been planted here on an area of 420 square meters.
wine variety from Neuzelle
In contrast to traditional cultivation on espaliers, the vines in Neuzelle are trained on individual posts. This makes growing the vines a little more laborious, but corresponds to the tradition of cultivation in this vineyard, to which the monastery winemakers remain true.
Six grape varieties
The grape varieties Aron, Phönix, Muscat, Elbling, Pinot Noir and Merzling thrive in the Neuzelle climate. The grapes from the wine harvest can be purchased exclusively at the visitor and tourist information office in Neuzelle.
Vineyard tours and group arrangements including wine tasting with the monastery winemakers can be booked through the monastery's visitor service. The tours offered by the "In and on the Vineyard" foundation are also worth a visit. In addition to the wine tasting, guests learn interesting facts about wine growing in the region.
Guided tours and tastings are available by prior arrangement. Registration at the Neuzelle Visitor Information Center
