Freienwalde Castle, a Prussian royal castle, was built in 1798/99 by David Gilly for the Prussian Queen Friederike Luise as a summer retreat in the classicist style.
In 1909, the industrialist, contemporary critic, writer and foreign minister of the Weimar Republic, Dr. Walther Rathenau, acquired it and had it restored. The Jewish politician lived and worked here for a time until his murder in 1922. The memorial on the upper floor of the palace presents the life and work of one of the most important German politicians of the 20th century.
In the castle's main floor, in addition to changing special exhibitions, the history of the once royal summer palace of Freienwalde is shown.
