On the western edge of the Oderbruch is Neuhardenberg Castle - a historical complex with impressive architecture and a rich history. The origins of the castle date back to the 17th century, and its development has been shaped by important personalities such as Karl August Prince von Hardenberg and the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Today the castle combines a historical atmosphere with a diverse cultural offering and an idyllic park landscape designed by Lenné.
The history of the castle complex
In 1679, Electress Dorothea of Brandenburg acquired the Quilitz properties, which later became Neuhardenberg. A baroque palace garden was created as early as 1708, and between 1786 and 1790, Joachim Bernhard von Prittwitz had the current palace building built as a three-wing complex with a mansard roof.
Another milestone was marked in 1814, when Karl August, Prince of Hardenberg, received the estate in recognition of his services and renamed it Neu Hardenberg in 1815. Under his leadership, the castle was converted into a classicist palace around 1820 according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The park was given its characteristic design by Lenné in 1822 and is still open to exploration today.
A place for art, culture and encounters
Neuhardenberg Castle now serves as a center for art, culture, science and business ethics. After extensive restoration by the German Savings Banks Association, the complex now houses a hotel, two restaurants and event rooms. The cultural program includes exhibitions, readings, concerts and theater performances that are internationally recognized and enable a wide variety of encounters.
