St. Mary's is the landmark of the city of Frankfurt (Oder). The five-aisled hall church is considered one of the most outstanding examples of North German brick Gothic architecture. In April 1945, the church was badly damaged during the war and burned down completely. The ruins were secured in the 50s and have been under renovation since 1979. The reconstruction of the enormous roof in 1996 is unparalleled in Germany. The greatest treasure, however, are the three fascinating twelve-metre-high choir windows with their colourful medieval stained glass. The picture cycle tells the story of creation, the legend of Christ and the Antichrist in 117 pictures. The other art treasures that were saved and are worth seeing - a 4,70 m high seven-flame bronze chandelier, the bronze baptismal font of the same height and a gilded winged altar, which is particularly notable for the richness and high quality of the carvings - are located in the nearby St. Gertraud Church. Since 2006, St. Marien has served as a socio-cultural center. Exhibitions, concerts and an annual Christmas market worth seeing take place here: Advent in St. Marien.
