Ziegenwerder

A real natural island is located between the Old and New Oder on Ziegenwerder in Frankfurt (Oder). The island owes its name to the fact that the goats of the Oder fishermen got their food from here. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Frankfurt residents spent their free time in the bathing establishments on the river, the last remnants of which had to be demolished in 2003 as part of the redevelopment into today's Europagarten. The lower-lying eastern part of the island with its old giant trees, which is often flooded in spring and autumn, was largely left in its original state. The western part has been transformed into a park with a promenade, extensive flower beds, the narrow waterways symbolically modelled on the "Hanseatic Lines" of the Oder, a hedge theatre with restaurants, a panoramic cinema and a large adventure playground.

Seasonal events such as films and concerts attract visitors. The former valley sand island serves as a bird sanctuary and, in its natural areas, as a habitat for over 100 animal and plant species.
