Cistercian monastery Altfriedland (partially preserved)

Our history
The founding of the Cistercian abbey by the Ascanians is believed to have taken place around 1230, the first documented mention of which dates back to 1271. The original name of the monastery, "Vredelant" (Friedland, pacified land), demonstrated the power of the Brandenburg margraves over the Silesian Piasts in Lebus. In addition to the land holdings, the rich dowries of the nuns, who mostly came from regional noble and wealthy bourgeois families, were crucial for the increase in property and development of the monastery. The monastery and its properties were secularized in 1546 during the Reformation.

Monastery complex
Of the medieval monastery complex, part of the west wing with cloister and refectory as well as the original Gothic monastery church still stand today. In the 16th century, the monastery complex was converted into a secular manor and the buildings were converted into farm buildings. The Roebel House from the 17th century - a house of the first knight family to live here - and the baroque manor house from the first half of the 18th century are reminders of the farm estate.

location and surroundings
Altfriedland is located in the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park and stretches along the edge of the Oderbruch. The monastery ruins are picturesquely situated on a headland between the Klostersee and the Kietzer See.
