The Oder-Spree Lake District remains an official cycling travel region

The official seal identifies regions that have taken on the sustainable planning of their cycle paths and have promoted the corresponding tourist offer over the years. CEO Rainer Schinkel and Managing Director Ellen Rußig accepted the certification at the International Tourism Exchange in Berlin. This means that the Oder-Spree Lake District belongs to an exclusive group of seven official ADFC cycling travel regions, which are also located in Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and the Ruhr area. For the tourism association, which is responsible for destination management in the Oder-Spree and Märkisch-Oderland districts as well as for the city of Frankfurt (Oder), cycling is a core competency and represents one of the most important location factors. Around 30 percent of tourism revenue is generated by cycle tourism. For this reason, there is an increased focus on improving and developing tourism offers to increase added value along the routes. At the same time, great importance is attached to the control of cycle paths and their signage. “We have deliberately decided to re-examine our cycling tourism location in order to make it clear that we in the Oder-Spree Lake District are committed to this issue and that our cycle path network is well positioned accordingly. Of course, we are proud of this special award and the unique selling point in the state. We hope that locals, holidaymakers and day visitors will be convinced and explore our water-rich region with its cultural peculiarities from the saddle of their bicycles,” said Rainer Schinkel, chairman of the Seenland Oder-Spree Tourism Association. As part of the recertification, 14 so-called “premium tours” were submitted to the ADFC. These cycle tours are between 26 and a maximum of 62 kilometres long, have thematic focuses and are spread across the entire travel region in different adventure areas. By checking and evaluating based on the criteria set by the ADFC, the guest can be assured of a certain quality.
