A Visit to Neuzelle Monastery

Neuzelle Monastery is known for monastic life and can look back on an eventful history. It shaped the region for many centuries. In 2018, Cistercian monks from Heiligenkreuz Abbey in Austria came and founded a priory in Neuzelle after a 200-year break. At every turn in the holiday resort of Neuzelle you encounter the historic past as well as the exciting and lively present.

Our advice: Before the trip, contact the Neuzelle Visitor Information Centre (Tel.: 033653-6102) and ask about the current opening hours - this ensures a relaxed journey.

Arrive and Go

From the Müllrose motorway exit, following the brown signs for "Kloster Neuzelle" will quickly take you to your destination. Once you arrive in the resort town of Neuzelle, you can stop right in front of the Neuzelle visitor information center (Bahnhofstrasse 22) and the staff will give you tips for a relaxing day. The road then leads directly to the monastery car park.

A short walk of 100 meters and you are in the middle of the monastery. At the monastery information desk you can get tickets for the Heavenly Theater Museum and the Cloister Museum.

Baroque splendor

Look up and there it is - the tower of the Catholic collegiate church of St. Mary. A short walk across the monastery courtyard and you reach the church via a ramp. The baroque splendor inside the church is overwhelming. Frescoes on the ceilings and walls, countless turkeys and saints on the altars and the singing of the monks during choral prayers become a lasting memory.

Historic cloister

Gothic contrast

The cloister is a stark contrast to the magnificent church. Built in the Gothic style, it appears plain and simple. It used to be the heart of the monastery and only the monks could enter. Today it houses the monastery museum, which presents the history of the monastery. The museum can be entered via a side entrance. There are minor restrictions in the cloister itself (small steps and 2 steps to the inner courtyard).

Heavenly Theater

Anyone visiting Neuzelle Monastery should not miss the opportunity to view the monastery's most valuable treasure. A museum was built beneath the vineyard especially for the Baroque backdrops, which are unique in Europe. Truly a "heavenly theater," because you can see a backdrop from the Neuzelle Passion Play (1751). The entrance to the museum is easily reached via a gray paved path.

Almost Roman

The second church, which is located on the monastery grounds, is smaller and stands out from the monastery ensemble in its color scheme and architectural form. The interior of the Protestant Church of the Holy Cross is also baroque. The 125 m2 ceiling fresco is one of the largest in Lower Lusatia and dominates the spatial composition.

The church is accessible via a step.

Holy Nature

The monastery garden in the immediate vicinity allows for a peaceful end to the monastery visit. Spaciously laid out with shady trees, a newly planted kitchen garden and a breathtaking view. Time can be lost in the distance.
