History tour through Bad Saarow

16 km long, about 2 hours

Immerse yourself in the history of the Bad Saarow country house colony and cycle past the sophisticated villas with their often extravagant architecture and the extensive parks. You will meet famous people and their exciting stories, the traces of which can still be seen in Bad Saarow today.

For some interesting buildings there is a acoustic "journey through time" in MP3 format, also for download.

tour description

The tour starts at the train station, which is in keeping with the style of the villa town's country house buildings and gives a first impression of the relaxed atmosphere of the spa town. The tour leads past buildings steeped in history such as the church of the former villa colony. This is where boxing world champion Max Schmeling married his wife, actress Anny Ondra, in 1933. An architectural rarity is the listed Scharwenkahaus, now the first Brandenburg Music Museum. Some of the houses were given popular names such as "Egg House" (Villa PAROLO) and Stargazer Villa (Tetens Villa) due to their extravagant architecture, or they were named after famous spa guests such as Maxim Gorki (Gorki House). The dark log cabin looks as if it came from a Russian fairy tale.

Culinary delights are also taken care of. Enjoy a coffee speciality and a delicious piece of cake in the ground-floor and easily accessible "Café Le Gateau Rose" or in the outdoor area of the coffee roastery. Or experience the breathtaking view of Scharmützelsee from the observation terrace of the Park Café restaurant - accompanied by fine dishes from the region.

For those who can't get enough, we recommend a short detour to the Swedish house on the southern edge of the residential area. This striking wooden house in Swedish style was built in 1911 by the porcelain manufacturer Schomburg for his Swedish wife to offer her a piece of home. The breathtaking view of the Scharmützelsee can still be enjoyed today! On the way back, the beer garden "Freilich am See" invites you to enjoy a cool drink right by the lake. If you want, you can jump into the clear water at the public bathing area right next to it.

Here in Cecilienpark, guests also have access to a public, barrier-free toilet.

The tour is perfect for a short trip to the lake. We also call it the Lake Love Tour!

One of them is the maritime-looking Scharmützelsee, which is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country and enchants visitors at any time of day or year. Magnificent views of the lake with its bays and beaches alternate with passages through forests and past meadows, interrupted by attractions such as the stork's nest in Radlow or places to stop for refreshments such as the Atelier Café in Wendisch Rietz, where you can also admire art. The start and finish is Bad Saarow with its villas and parks.

As the name suggests, the tour combines cycling along the water with culinary breaks in a relaxed way. And it doesn't get much fresher than this: zander, eel, pike or carp were just swimming in the clear lake and a little later they are being offered freshly prepared or smoked in the restaurant, at the snack bar or at the fishermen's stall.

Maybe there is still time to look up to the sky: with a bit of luck, you might see the osprey circling majestically, also hunting for fresh fish.
