Due to the approximately 30-meter elevation difference between Lake Straussee and Lake Stienitzsee, the meltwater was also carried away by the fast-flowing stream. In the past, this hydropower was used by five watermills. Today, part of the Annatal valley has been declared a protected landscape area.
