Directions
The starting point is Brieskow-Finkenheerd in the direction of Wiesenau. Past the “Zum Oderfischer” restaurant, you walk along the Friedrich Wilhelm Canal, which was completed in 1668 under the Great Elector, to the former lock keeper's house. At the Brieskow lock, the first of originally 14 locks on what was once the most important waterway from Breslau to Hamburg, an inscription still commemorates its construction on the orders of Friedrich Wilhelm.
Always following the path that alternates between the two banks, you will reach the monument to the 200th anniversary of the Friedrich Wilhelm Canal from 1869 next to the Weißenberg lock. Due to the destruction of the locks at the end of the Second World War, a charming flora and fauna reclaimed the entire canal. The current Oder-Spree Canal was built in 1860 to relieve the Friedrich Wilhelm Canal and took away its importance.
Now you leave the locks in Klixmühle and Groß Lindow behind you and come directly to the pier of the tow barge. A trip on the tow barge through the gentle nature is highly recommended.
Right next to the Groß Lindow lock, you can take a break from hiking in the cozy Preussenstuben. Once you have refreshed yourself, you can head back past the neo-Gothic church in the direction of Klixmühle, the first cutting and grinding mill in the Lebus region.
Stay on the right side of the canal until you reach the Finkenheerd lock and enjoy the idyllic landscape once again before returning to the “Zum Oderfischer” inn.
You should not miss a trip on the fishing raft "Blue Anne" across the beautiful Brieskower Lake to the Steile Wand, an ideal breeding ground for countless rare bird species. In the past, the wooden barges were pulled upstream on towpaths by people or draft horses, "towed" as they used to say.
