Freight was once laboriously transported over sandy land tracks, but thanks to this waterway, goods could be easily hauled on barges. As you walk along the scenic towpath from Philadelphia to Kummersdorf, you will learn more about the fascinating history of towing.
Start / Finish: Storkow (Mark) Castle
length / duration 17 km / approx. 4 - 5 hours
Course: Philadelphia, Kummersdorf, New Boston
Tour Description
The hike begins at Storkow Castle, the visitor center of the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park. It offers free parking and is easily accessible by public transport.
The circular route is around 17 km long and can also be covered by bike. We do not recommend taking small children on the route as the towpath is very narrow and runs close to the water.
The route leads past the historic market square along the green signposted “Salt Trail”, a circular route through the Luchwiesen nature reserve with its typical salt plants such as sea trident and salt bird's-foot trefoil.
The next town is called Philadelphia. The small street village has nothing in common with its American counterpart, but a historical connection through the “Old Fritz” cannot be denied.
The towpath begins at the edge of the village in front of the canal bridge and leads for about 3 km in a north-westerly direction to Kummersdorf. The path runs parallel to the water and is picturesquely lined with trees.
Following the “Street of Youth”, after about 2 km you pass the railway line of the RB 36 (Berlin-Frankfurt (Oder)), followed by small forest areas and the main road (L23) before the path reaches the small town of Neu Boston. Frederick II also had a hand in this.
Passing the Lebbiner Lake, you will soon see the first houses of Storkow. It is worth taking a detour to the Irrlandia interactive park (open May - October).
Over the drawbridge and through the old town it is only a short distance back to the castle, where the circular route ends.
