Not only is the centre of the former Prussian kingdom located here, but important figures in German history are also associated with this place. Neuhardenberg, a real pearl of classical architecture and landscape design, today forms the unique backdrop for one of the most important cultural sites in Brandenburg. Before Neuhardenberg was given its current name in 1815, the original town of Quilitz changed hands several times. In 1820, the new owner of the castle, Karl August Prince von Hardenberg, commissioned the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel to convert it into a classical palace. The ensemble also includes the famous village church, which was also built by Schinkel and in which the prince's heart is kept. The castle park was laid out in 1822 according to plans by the landscape architects Peter Joseph Lenné and Hermann Prince von Pückler-Muskau. The von Hardenberg family remained very fond of garden art later on. A rose garden was laid out on the east side of the castle. In front of the castle, the historic meadow structure has been recreated by replanting the double avenue of linden trees. The entire complex can be clearly seen from the obelisk in front of the castle. The western cavalier house, together with the coach house, serves as a hotel. When the weather is good, the Brennerei country inn opens its sheltered terrace in the courtyard. The orangery, once a winter quarters for exotic plants, is connected to the garden side and is now a modern event space. The park is ideal for strolling and having a picnic.
