travel tip
When you arrive at Strausberg train station, keep left and walk along Bahnhofstrasse. Then turn left into Ernst-Thälmann-Strasse. You will then see the lake on your right. Your hiking adventure begins from there.
Idyllic Annatal: Nature conservation and past mills
Your late riser tour starts at Strausberg train station and you follow the 66-lakes trail north. After about 15 minutes you enter the forest and walk along the western edge of the "Herrensee, Lange Dammwiesen and Barnimhänge" nature reserve. Endangered species such as the otter, fire-bellied toad, great crested newt and numerous orchids exist here.
A quiet stream, as small watercourses are called in Brandenburg, meanders through the forest. Depending on the location, time of year and rainfall, the Annafließ is sometimes more and sometimes less prominent. You pass several former mills: the imposing mill wheel greets you at the remains of the hammer mill, and the renaturalized swan pond is being dammed at the former cutting mill. Information boards on an educational trail show you interesting background information.
Eldorado for waterfowl: the Herrensee
Shortly before the Herrensee you pass the Ruheforst, which is used for forest burials. Between large oaks, beeches and pines, wooden benches invite you to pause for a moment and carefully observe the flora and bird life. Now also accompanied by the Way of St. James, the tour takes you to the Herrensee. The impressive swamp landscape is lined with alders and reed belts. The large shallow water areas provide habitat and food for rare water birds such as the great egret. You can also observe grey herons, grey geese, tufted ducks, cormorants and other water birds from the east bank. Sometimes you can see a pair of cranes wading in the shallow water. In the meadows and in the swamp forest you might also see wild boars and deer. It's best to pack a pair of binoculars!
Straussee
When you arrive in Strausberg town, you will notice the clear and calm waters. Visibility of up to 7m is possible, but you won't find any annoying motorboats on the Straussee. Only the Straussee ferry operates. It is Europe's only electric cable-operated passenger ferry. For over 100 years, it has connected the town centre with the forest area "beyond the lake". Treat yourself to a refreshing swim in the lake or simply enjoy the view of the water. Following the idyllic promenade, you will pass the historic bathing establishment. The small lido has a nostalgic charm. The wooden buildings date from the 1920s and are somehow reminiscent of the baths on the Baltic Sea. Rent a rowing boat and enjoy the view of the beautiful silhouette of Strausberg!
old town atmosphere and sundowner
Towards the end of the tour, you should take a detour to the dreamy Fischerkietz. Traditionally, fishing was part of the livelihood of the residents of the area. Today, a small viewing platform is idyllically hidden here. Several information points on the "Seesichten" tell stories. The well-preserved city fortifications with the city wall, the ramparts or the rest of the Landsberg Gate Tower are worth a stop. Before you start the return journey on the S-Bahn: how about a sundowner with a view over the lake? In the elegant restaurant in the Fischerkiez, in the Amiceria or simply on the Strausseepromenade, you can watch the sun go down and end your tour in a relaxed manner.
