The route is mostly very rural, with fields and forests alternating with small villages. Only in the cities of Frankfurt (Oder), Fürstenwalde and Berlin with its many sights does it become a little more urban. The Way of St. James follows an old trade and pilgrimage route, today's A12, as far as Fürstenwalde. From there it goes near the Spree to the gates of Berlin in Erkner. It goes through the Berlin districts of Köpenick, Rudow and Marienfelde, partly on the Wall Trail, to the old town of Teltow.
