Already in the Middle Ages, pilgrims set out on the long journey to Santiago de Compostela on foot, by carriage or on horseback. In eastern Brandenburg there is a section of the European Way of St. James network that follows the historical route. In Frankfurt (Oder), the Way of St. James coming from Poland meets the Brandenburg Way of St. James. From there, three routes lead further west. One of them is the Way of St. James to Teltow, where it meets the Via Imperii south of Berlin.

The route is mostly very rural, with fields and forests alternating with small villages. Only in the cities of Frankfurt (Oder), Fürstenwalde and Berlin with its many sights does it become a little more urban. The Way of St. James follows an old trade and pilgrimage route, today's A12, as far as Fürstenwalde. From there it goes near the Spree to the gates of Berlin in Erkner. It goes through the Berlin districts of Köpenick, Rudow and Marienfelde, partly on the Wall Trail, to the old town of Teltow.
