The gateway to the Schlaubetal
The tour begins in the mill town of Müllrose. The Nature Park Center makes the perfect starting point. Before setting off, a detour to the promenade along the Großer Müllroser See (Great Müllrose Lake) is worthwhile. The mill building of the Oderland Mills, once a medieval mill and now a large family business, supplies regional bakeries and offers a Schlaubetal baking mix in its mill shop.
To hear the brook whisper
Beyond Mixdorf, the terrain slopes down, cobblestones hint at history, and in the saddle, the glacial valley becomes a tactile and sensory experience. At Kupferhammer, the Schlaube River comes close for the first time. A small bridge is the perfect spot to listen to the babbling of the stream. It tells of its past: where alder trees now stand, water power once drove the valley's mills, including a fulling mill and a grain mill.
From the Fünfeichen Heights to Lake Wirchen
With a strong pedal stroke, you leave the stream gorge and gain altitude. The path leads past Lake Schervenz. The Fünfeichen Heights mark the highest point of the tour. A fun, undulating route takes you through a landscape of fields and hedgerows, past Kieselwitz, towards Lake Wirchen.
Two sisters
On the western side of the valley in Chossewitz, you don't encounter the Schlaube, but its smaller sister: the Oelse. The hills between the two streams form a major watershed: while the Schlaube flows eastward towards the Baltic Sea, the Oelse flows westward into the North Sea. The route passes through the hamlets of Klingemühle and Jankemühle. In Dammendorf, historical forestry practices come to life. The Heathland Riding and Forestry Museum brings together the region's forest history.
"Look around you here"
The road leads down to the middle reaches of the Schlaube River. A short climb to the Siehdichum forester's lodge follows. From the hilltop, views open up across the lakes. The inn was once a hunting lodge of the Neuzelle monks, and its name still reflects its purpose: from the hilltop, stunning views of the lakes unfold between the trees. In Brandenburg's most wooded municipality, a tranquil forester's cemetery also commemorates those who once tended these forests.
