Lake View Loop: Wirchensee

Common goldeneyes are particularly easy to observe at Lake Wirchensee. These waterbirds don't nest on the ground, but in tree cavities – often in abandoned black woodpecker holes and sometimes up to ten meters above the ground. Shortly after hatching, the chicks jump into the depths and follow their mother to the water.

The forester's viewpoint is another of the special spots on this loop. From this "favorite viewpoint," the view stretches far across the lake and its wooded shores. With a bit of luck, you might spot white-tailed eagles or ospreys circling overhead. In spring, the forest glows in fresh shades of green, while in autumn, colorful foliage and warm light are reflected in the lake.

The Schlaube River originates on the southern bank, in the Wirchen meadows. From here, it flows through Lake Wirchen and on through the valley that bears its name. The "Kleiner Horst" peninsula, a roughly 200-year-old pine tree, the Wirchen hills, and the bridge over the still-young Schlaube make this short loop varied and interesting. Numerous benches invite you to enjoy the tranquility and the ever-changing interplay of colors between the forest and the water at your own pace.
