The monastery pond is located in the middle of the resort town of Neuzelle and right outside the gates of Neuzelle Monastery. There are many places to sit around the small pond, from where you can let your gaze wander over the monastery pond and enjoy the beautiful panorama of the monastery complex. The lively activity of the numerous ducks and the pair of swans is great fun for young and old.
The monastery pond was once created by the Cistercian monks. It is fed by the small Dorche, which meanders for many kilometers to Neuzelle. The small pond was once used for fish farming and self-sufficiency for the monks.
Later, the Neuzeller monastery brewery made use of the ice in the winter months. Large blocks of ice were transported from the monastery pond to the brewery's ice cellar and used for cooling.
Today, fish farming is once again carried out (privately) in the monastery pond. Once a year, you can buy the freshly caught fish.
When the monastery was a monastery, the monastery pond was much larger than we see it today. And there was a beautiful little house on the island. Today, the beaver feels at home here and the many water birds use it as a place to sleep and breed.
