Most of the monuments in Bad Saarow were created with the founding of the villa colony in the outskirts of the metropolis of Berlin in 1906. The first country houses, the legendary train station complex and the historic mud bath represent successful echoes of the contemporary Heimat style, especially of German spa architecture. The designers gave the place its specific face through the unity of development plan, architecture and landscape design.
An astonishing architectural diversity developed, especially in the 1920s. The combination of tradition and modernity corresponded to the taste of the builders and the ideas of experimental architects.
Directions
The discovery tour begins at the historic train station in Bad Saarow, which can be reached by regional train. Right from the start, you can feel the relaxing atmosphere of a relaxed spa town with majestic Wilhelminian villas. Sophisticated, magnificent buildings, lined up like a string of pearls on the banks of the Scharmützelsee, give you an idea of the atmosphere of the 20s and 30s, when well-heeled citizens strolled along the lake promenade and enjoyed the ambience by the lake.
The ideal climate and the moor discovered in 1914 gave Bad Saarow a special reputation as a center for healing mud baths against joint pain, stress, rheumatism and negative disorders of the autonomic nervous system.
The tourist information office is located right next to the train station and will be happy to tell you all the highlights of the place and advise you on this tour and other excursion options. To experience the discovery tour not only visually but also acoustically, we recommend the "Dream Housing" audio guide, which allows you to listen to MP3 audio tracks of the individual highlights. The audio guide can be found on the Scharmützelsee region website and can easily be played via your own internet/mobile phone.
From the train station, the tour leads past the Kurpark Kolonaden and the Gorki House "Villa Putti" to Ulmenstraße, where the SaarowCentrum is located. It not only houses the library, but also changing exhibitions. The impressive rotunda inside invites you to marvel and linger.
We continue on to Moorstrasse, where we find a special architectural rarity: the listed Scharwenkahaus, which today serves as Brandenburg's first music museum. Back on Ulmenstrasse and follow it to the church of the villa colony. This is where Max Schmeling married his wife Anny Ondra in 1933.
From here, the route heads towards Bad Saarow harbor, where you can take a short break before heading back along Seestraße. Lined left and right by impressive and beautiful villas, the road leads to the spa gardens, where the SaarowTherme thermal baths are located. Along the way, you will come across many interesting houses with exciting histories.
Finally, it's back to the historic train station complex. If you want, you can now start your journey home or stay a little longer in Bad Saarow and let yourself be pampered by the many culinary options. Or, after this impressive tour, you can relax with a boat trip on Scharmützelsee, from where you can admire the silhouette of the town.
