From the train station of the same name, it is not far to the fairytale castle Hubertushöhe. Once you have arrived at one of the highlights of the tour, you can now start your hike in a relaxed manner.
fairytale ambience
The regional train takes you to the small Hubertushöhe stop. You are only a few meters away from Lake Storkow. The entrance couldn't be more beautiful: you are greeted by Hubertushöhe Castle. The former hunting lodge borders directly on the lake and is embedded in a large, picturesque park with old trees and fragrant meadows. The magnificent property with a castle, terrace, pretty outbuildings, fisherman's cottage with snack bar and beer garden, and harbor with boathouses was purchased by two industrialists in 2012. They want to turn the previous use as a luxury hotel into a place for everyone who is interested in art, culture, and literature. The park is open from April to October.
Babylon Berlin on Lake Storkower
Hubertushöhe Castle is currently used as an event location for weddings and conferences and you can stroll through the park and around the lake in a relaxed atmosphere. There are many photo opportunities! Fun fact: In the first season of the series "Babylon Berlin", the hunting lodge becomes an elite rowing club and the Storkower See is quickly converted into the Wannsee. The main characters Charlotte and Greta spend a day full of fateful encounters on its shores.
Along the lake and past lost places
The tour now takes you along the shore path with beautiful views of Lake Storkow and towards Wendisch Rietz. A special place is the small church of St. Mary. It was built in the shape of a fish from wood and can be admired with a short detour into Robert-Koch-Strasse. The trail along the shore also takes you to a hidden bathing area. Across the road in the forest you can see abandoned buildings that belonged to a former convalescent home of the National Defense Council of the GDR.
On wooden planks through the swamp
This is followed by a beautiful section through a nature reserve. The adventurous log dam, now also recognizable as the 66-lakes trail, crosses the mystical alder forest and a swamp area. Endangered species such as otters, bats and the moor frog live here. Fun fact: In order to impress the ladies, the otherwise brown male moor frogs can develop an intense blue coloration for a few days during the spawning season in April.
Scandinavian flair in Wendisch Rietz
In Wendisch Rietz, the Storkower See and the Märkisches Meer, as Fontane called the impressive Scharmützelsee, are connected by a canal. Here, the clear lake opens up far to the north. You can chill out on a large lawn and jump into the cool water at the bathing area on the southern tip of the lake. Or you can try the homemade apple-mint lemonade, ice cream and homemade cakes in the friendly Atelier Café in the old village school opposite.
If you still have time, you can take a detour to Scandinavia. It takes around 20 minutes to cross the lock bridge to the small harbor. Just like in Sweden, the red and yellow wooden houses greet you from the water.
