The northern Oderbruch captivates visitors with its unique scenic beauty. On the one hand, vast plains, which were created by draining new land over many decades, and on the other hand, the hilly Barnim, which in some places rises up to 100 meters into the air, make up the charm of the region. Gnarled trees along the Alte Oder and extensive reed zones form the original habitat for species-rich life. Bad Freienwalde and Oderberg are two places worth seeing on your way.

Tour description:
The tour starts at the original course of the Oder in the Wriezen harbor. The historic lime kilns are its landmarks, visible from afar. With the start of limestone production in 1836, the infrastructure of the Oderbruch began to develop. Another important trading post was fishing, which was favored by the abundance of water around Wriezen.

After the first few meters on the New Canal, the tour enters the Old Oder. This makes the route easier in a natural way, thanks to the water flow, which can be felt all the way to the destination in Oderberg. The pristine rows of trees and dense reed banks can therefore be admired without much effort.

The bathing area at the bridge of Neugaul or the rest area in Altranft offer you the first opportunity to take a break on land. In Altranft, various historical buildings and the castle can be visited in an open-air museum. A little further north in Neutornow there is also a lovely place to bathe. The well-known historical poet Theodor Fontane often stayed in Schiffmühle, visiting his father's inconspicuous half-timbered house, which can still be visited today.

Further north, the slopes of the Barnim near Bad Freienwalde are clearly visible. The swimming stop in Bralitz is the last stop before reaching Oderberg. A visit to the Inland Shipping Museum is also recommended.

Tip: A “tower diploma” awaits those who climb all four observation towers in the nearby town of Bad Freienwalde.
